CONFIDENTIAL INFORMANTS

If you are facing VUCSA charges, the police may ask you at some point to be a confidential informant (or “CI”). A confidential informant will help the police apprehend others that were involved in the crime in exchange for lower sentencing.

This is a difficult decision that I can help you make, considering factors such as:

• Your friends and reputation: Obviously no one wants to rat out their friends, but you also need to consider the nature of these friendships, and what would happen if the situation were reversed.
• Your safety: Many people are reluctant to take on the confidential informant role, fearing that if their friends found out, they might injure or kill the informant. However, there are resources and programs to keep informants safe that are effective. Besides, they are going to think you’re an informant anyway, so the danger is already present.
• Your future: You’ll need to weigh your loyalty to your friends and your concerns about safety against the very real opportunity to be free and avoid prison time.
